Around the World Quiz Bowl

This activity is from, Make a World of Difference:  50 Asset-Building Activities to Help Teens Explore Diversity by Dawn C. Oparah. Here is the cover of the book as shown on Amazon.  You can review the table of contents on Amazon's site, so you can check out the different activities that are included in this resource.  I like, and have used, quite a few of them in a variety of courses.  The one I have chosen to describe here, I used in Grade 9 Applied Geography.

Make a World of Difference
I thought this activity might be interesting for those people who are finishing up grade 9 geography and are working on the Canada and the world part of the course.  It includes a quiz about the number of countries around the world, how many countries are on each continent, naming different countries on each continent, and naming famous people from North America with different heritages (African, Asian, First Nations, Hispanic/Latino, European).  Questions (p 50) that relate to the quiz include:

  1. When naming famous North Americans and their contributions, if you eliminate the answers that represent dead people, athletes, and entertainers, would you still have people on your list?
  2. Why might it be important for us to know more about the world?  How does that benefit us?
  3. Why do you think we know so little about contributions of North Americans from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds?
  4. What can we do to become more aware of the world and people of cultures different from our own?
