Culturally Situated Design Tools
I was reminded yesterday about this website,"Culturally Situated Design Tools," and thought I'd post it today. It is a cross-curricular resource that could be used in Math, Geography, History, Native Studies, English, and potentially other classes. It includes maps, math software, beading activities using Cartesian coordinates, arc geometry activities with Anishinaabe structures, historical information about First Nations locations, and current practices (such as utilizing arcs in building structures). The "Virtual Bead Loom" and "Anishinaabe Arcs" are 2 sections of the site that I find particularly useful. You can check it out by clicking on the picture below which will link you to the site.
I found this resource in, Culturally Responsive Mathematics Education, Editors Brian Greer, Swapna Mukhopadhvay, Arthur B. Powell, and Sharon Nelson-Barber, in the chapter "Native American Analogues to the Cartesian Coordinate System." The picture below is from Amazon, where you can check out the table of contents, and take a look at a few other parts of the book, if you'd like to see more about it.
